Not so long ago, really—a few years before the establishment of democracy—South African museums celebrated International Museum Day in the following manner: “Tea was served in real Edwardian fashion, letters were written with old quill-pens, conversation took place on antique telephones and farm bread baked in clay ovens was served.”1 Moreover, these activities were hyped as dissolving the barriers separating patrons from institutions.
