Nirmala Deshpande: “Mary Had a Little Lamb” (Marathi)
Award-winning novelist Nirmala Deshpande was born in 1917. This story appeared in the magazine Shabdashrcc in 1982. A Hindi translation appeared in a special issue on women writers of the now-defunct literary journal Sarika, (October 16–31, 1984, 27–34). The story is interesting for its depiction of an interracial relationship in terms that appear nonjudgmental until almost the conclusion. Once the relationship moves from being romantic to being explicitly sexual, a sudden reversal takes place, with the Caucasian girl being stereotyped as the sexually predatory lesbian and the Indian girl as a misled heterosexual.
