Abstract

Madame Restell was the business name of Ann Trow Lohman (1811– 1878), the most famous abortionist in New York City. An emigrant from England, she began her work in the late 1830s and, aided by Charles Lohman, her printer husband, advertised her services openly in the penny press. The illustration opposite shows one such advertisement.
