Abstract
“Attitudes toward Sex in Antebellum America” must seem to some readers a ridiculous subject. Wasn’t prudery in that era so extreme that piano legs were covered by pantaloons? A typical reaction to this topic by students and colleagues has been to ask with a laugh, “What? Was there more than one?”
