Abstract
The process of doing the research itself always throws up more questions than answers. There are always too many leads to follow, and not enough time to do justice to even the chosen paths. We are human and grow weary of our subject at times, wishing that the whole business were finished and done with. And yet, when it is done and a little time has passed, our mind reflects back to the lessons that we learned and we realise how our horizons have widened because of the experience.
In research the horizon recedes as we advance, and is no nearer at sixty than it was at twenty. As the power of endurance weakens with age, the urgency of the pursuit grows more intense … And research is always incomplete. (Casaubon 1875, quoted by Pattison 1980)
