Abstract

In recent years, many LACs have embarked upon trade liberalization drives. The first sustained experience with trade liberalization in recent decades was in Chile, which launched a process in the 1970s that, by the end of that decade, had made its economy one of the most open in the world.

This chapter was written with Manuel Agosin. It was first published in Revista de la CEPAL, No. 50 (LC/G. 1767-P), Santiago, ECLAC (August 1993), and in the Journal of Interamerican Studies and World Affairs, Vol. 37, No. 3, (Fall 1995). The useful comments of Oscar Altimir, Renato Baumann, Robert Devlin, Winston Fritsch, Jorge Katz, Benardo Kosacoff, Carlos Massad, Joseph Ramos, Jaime Ros and Gert Rosenthal are highly appreciated.
