Abstract
The analysis of the relationship between European integration and the success of ethnoregionalist parties in Europe has received up until now very little scholarly attention. This lacuna is partially due to the lack of comparative research treating this group of parties as a genuine European party family. This neglect is reinforced by the feeble representation of these parties in terms of seats in the European Parliament, which is in the first place due to the relatively small size of the regions in which they compete for votes (De Winter and Türsan, 1998).1 Finally, ethnicity in modern societies is often seen as a “vestigial phenomenon” (Esman, 1977: 371) and particularly within the context of an integrated Europe and the gradual functional disappearance of the old nation-states.
