Abstract
Benjamin Rush (1745–1813), a graduate of the College of New Jersey, statesman, physician, and professor of chemistry and medicine in Philadelphia, was also one of the early Republic’s leading educational theorists and reformers. His influential Thoughts Upon the Mode of Education Proper in a Republic was published in Philadelphia in 1786 and widely reproduced in periodicals around the country.
