Educational, Diagnostic, and Supportive Psychosocial Interventions for Latinos with Dementia

Caring for Latinxs with Dementia in a Globalized World

Abstract

This chapter describes Latinos’* unique experiences of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD) that pose particular challenges for the provision of relevant and accessible psychosocial interventions. It presents specific examples of educational, diagnostic, and supportive psychosocial interventions for Latinos with ADRD and their caregivers. It concludes with a discussion of future directions in the development of psychosocial interventions that target both persons with ADRD and their caregivers.

* As used in the 2010 Census, Hispanic or Latino refers to a person of Cuban, Mexican, Puerto Rican, Central or South American, or other Spanish culture or origin regardless of race. The terms Hispanic and Latino are often used interchangeably, and there is currently no agreement as to which is more acceptable, although different individuals and groups have a preference. Because the people we work with more often use the term Latino, we employ it here, unless, when referring to specific literature, the cited authors have chosen a different term. Furthermore, Latinos are an extremely heterogeneous group, varying by race, ethnicity, religion, country of origin, socioeconomic status, and other factors. However, because of their common aggregation in the literature, we will also use the term Latino without further subdivision.
