Abstract
Latino older adults may be at greater risk for dementia and depression. The barriers to adequate healthcare clearly affect early diagnosis, treatment, and management of depression and dementia, a situation which becomes even more complicated when there is a presence of other comorbid health conditions. The relationship between depression and dementia, including the challenges associated with assessment and diagnosis for the Latino aging population, is highlighted in this chapter. Along with the focus on the Latino with dementia, a discussion is also provided regarding the role of the caregiver of the person with dementia and the challenges that Latino caregivers face. This chapter concludes with recommendations for further research such as conducting longitudinal studies that examine the impact of age, education, language, acculturation, and daily functioning on the progression of cognitive decline and dementia. The authors also comment on the need for greater attention to Latino older adults’ emotional functioning, in general, and that of Latinos with dementia, in particular, as well as the needs of their caregivers.
