Examination for Diseases of the Bone
A bony lesion or a swelling of the bone is always fixed to it and cannot be moved away from the bone. Completion of a case history should clarify certain informative points: 1. Age: A solitary cyst of the bone is seen in children, after which it becomes rare. Osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bones) usually presents with multiple fractures, dwarfism, and deformities since birth. Acute osteomyelitis is seen commonly in children, whereas tuberculous osteomyelitis may be seen at any age. Nearly all benign bone tumors occur in adolescents and at younger ages, whereas primary malignant bone tumors mainly occur in young people, and secondary carcinoma of bone is usually seen in those older than 40 years of age.
