Anaesthetic Contributions in Enhanced Recovery

Abstract

Enhanced recovery (ER) not only reduces length of stay in hospital for patients but can help reduce the development of complications. The development of a complication during major surgery has important implications for patients beyond that of immediate morbidity and mortality risk. In 2005 Khuri and colleagues published a study from a database of 105,951 patients undergoing eight common operations. It showed the key determinant of reduced postoperative survival at follow-up at 8 years was the occurrence of a complication within 30 days of surgery. Rapid recovery without complications after surgery may also offer survival benefits for cancer patients because patients are fitter sooner after surgery to have follow on chemotherapy.
