Evidence-Based Management of Rectal Cancer

Abstract

The evidence base for the management of rectal cancer is now considerable. Randomized trials and other good quality studies have provided the clinician with a rationale for the management of most tumors. Malignancies whose distal margin is measured at 15 cm or less from the anal verge using a rigid sigmoidoscope are classified as rectal. This chapter will consider staging, adjuvant therapy, and surgery of rectal malignancy with special emphasis on supporting evidence in the surgical literature that should to inform management decisions.
