Abstract
A look at the legal framework behind and the responsibilities of referrers in the context of referrals for examinations involving ionising radiations. This chapter considers the recommendations of the International Commission on Radiological Protection and how those recommendations have been incorporated into European directives and national legislation. Specific requirements of UK, Spanish, Irish, American and Australian laws are detailed. In all cases, referrals can only be made by specified groups of professionals and must provide sufficient information for the examination to be justified.
