Abstract

In critical care medicine the diagnostic validity of medical imaging techniques can be often improved by the use of contrast media. However, important particularities regarding application unwanted side effects, and possible prevention have to be taken into account when using contrast agents in severely ill patients. This chapter provides an overview over the different contrast agents, considers their pharmacological properties and application. Furthermore, practical aspects of their use are highlighted including up-to-date recommendations regarding limitation of side effects.
