Abstract
In this chapter we will introduce the idea of graphs, but these are not the pictures with axes and lines which you may have been used to. This use of the word graph represents a collection of vertices and of edges. They are usually shown as very simple pictures, where the vertices are represented by dots and edges by lines.
We begin by drawing some simple graphs – see Figure 8.1. Then we will give a more formal definition of what we mean. We go on to count various classes of graphs.
