Vertigo and Dizziness

Abstract

Signs and symptoms of clinical vertigo syndromes are described according to the major perceptual and motor functions of the vestibular system. History taking is particularly important. It includes types, duration, and triggers of vertigo and accompanying symptoms such as audiological and visual impairments and a combination of dizziness and vertigo with headache. A table provides information about the frequency of various forms of vertigo.

The neuro-ophthalmological and neuro-otological examinations are described with which ocular motor and vestibular functions are tested. They are richly illustrated by 15 figures. In addition, laboratory and imaging examinations, such as video-oculography, vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials, audiometry, posturography, and gait analysis as well as advanced CT and MRI techniques relevant for the management of patients, are explained.

General principles of therapy are discussed separately for medical treatment, physical therapy, surgery, and psychological/psychiatric and behavioral treatment.
