Abstract

Approximately 94–96 % of testicular tumors are of germ cell origin. The remaining tumors are either sex cord tumors or lymphomas.

The germ cell tumors are rare (approximately 1 % of all tumors in men). They are classified histologically into seminomas and non-seminomas. More than 50 % of germ cell tumors consist of more than one cell type. The chapter will discuss the pathological classification based on the modified WHO classification and the role of immunohistochemical techniques in the diagnosis.

The role of testicular cancer markers will highlight how they can assist in the diagnosis, staging, monitoring, recurrence and in the assessment of prognosis.

The different microscopic appearances of different types of testicular germ cell neoplasms will be discussed including those with mixed types. The importance of intra-tubular germ cell neoplasm as a premalignant lesion will be addressed.

Non germ cell tumors including Leydig cell tumors, sertoli cell tumor will also be discussed in relation to both their morphology and biological behavior.
