Future Directions: The Way Ahead

  • Michael F. McTear

In the preceding chapters of this book the theory and practice of spoken dialogue technology have been reviewed and documented. This chapter examines future directions. The first section reviews some current work on advanced multimodal systems that incorporate spoken language input and output as one of the modalities that may be used in combination with other modalities such as pen, touch, movement, gesture, gaze, and head and body movement. In the second section some areas for future research are identified and the relationship between academic and commercial research and development in spoken dialogue technology is explored.
