Abstract

Classification societies have a fundamental role to play to promote safety of life, environmental protection and property protection in preventing accidents at sea. Their involvement deals with the approval of the vessel’s design prior to construction, and continues through surveys and inspections of the vessel during the building period and its entire operational life. Classification societies take on two missions: classification and certification. Classification is a private service, consisting of issuing rules and enduring that these rules are applied. This activity concerns mainly hull strength and reliability of machine and equipment. Certification concerns the enforcement of international regulations on safety of life and environmental protection on behalf of Flag States.
