Public perceptions of energy efficiency and recycling: how these can inform the communications and design processes
This paper presents two studies into energy efficiency and recycling whose aim is to explain why behaviour of the public continues largely to disregard the available advice and knowledge. Three factors for attitudes to recycling were found; sex and nationality differences were found in both attitudes and behaviour. Attributional analyses suggests that non-sustainability issues may govern people’s responses to recycling. Results are discussed with reference to the implications for designers.
