Risk-informed Decision Making at the Hungarian Nuclear Safety Authority

Conference paper

The national nuclear safety authorities in most of the countries with nuclear power plants follow deterministic principles in their decision making. During the decision making in all of its regulatory areas the Nuclear Safety Directorate of the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority (HAEA NSD) examines as well if rules and criteria derived from deterministic safety analyses performed with conservative assumptions are met. Evolution of a new decision making mechanism can be recognised during which information gained from PSA is also taken into consideration. Following the terminology originated from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission it became well known as the risk-informed decision making.
