Abstract

A database is essentially an organised collection of logically inter-connected data items. A computer system which is responsible for the efficient storage and retrieval of the data items in a database is called a Database Management System (or simply a database system or a DBMS). Thus the purpose of a DBMS is to organise and manipulate information.
