Abstract

In this chapter, we introduce the mathematical definitions and tools that play a crucial role in the design and analysis of adaptive systems. Most of these concepts and results are also used in other areas of system theory and a reader who is familiar with them may wish to skip the relevant sections of this chapter and focus only on the items that are very specific to adaptive systems. A practicing engineer, on the other hand, will find that this chapter offers a complete tutorial coverage of all the mathematical pre-requisites that are crucial to the understanding of the rest of this monograph.
