Abstract
NIH-sponsored Mentored Career Development Award Grants (also known as “K Awards”) are the portals through which the majority of aspiring, independent academic investigators gingerly step into the large portfolio of NIH funding. Often young academic surgeons because of the labor-intensive and time-consuming nature of surgery do not take advantage of this very accessible funding potential.
