This chapter deals with the complex subject of features. Be aware that there are a lot of opinions about features and that there is a lot of misinformation, too. The chapter is a personal opinion, but tries to explain more about some of the background to the feature debate. However, features are something about which the reader should form her or his own opinion and so this chapter should not be taken as definitive. The chapter describes the two main lines of feature research, feature recognition and design-by-features, with advantages and disadvantages of both. The chapter also presents some of the misconceptions about feature use in application areas such as manufacture.
