Abstract
Unlike Chapters 4 and 5, which were devoted to statements about the nature of the solution of an equation y = f(x) for x given y, this chapter is devoted to methods of actually solving equations y = f(x) for x given y. The phrase ‘actually solving’ will be interpreted to mean ‘describing a numerical process for determining the solution to any prescribed degree of accuracy’.
