Abstract

In this chapter we make a detailed presentation of the theory of factorization structures for sinks. There are two reasons for doing this. First, factorization structures have always played a fundamental role in the theory of categories and, as it will become clear later on, they also play an essential role in the theory developed in this book. As a matter of fact, the basic working environment from Chapter 4 on will be a category X with a factorization structure for sinks. Consequently, properties of this setting will be used continuously.
