Compactness

Abstract

In this chapter we use the concept of closure operator to introduce a general notion of “compactness” in an arbitrary category. This notion was inspired by the Kuratowski-Mrówka characterization: a topological space X is compact if and only if for any topological space Y, the projection \( X \times Y\xrightarrow{{\pi _Y }}Y \) is closed.
