Representations of dynamical systems play an important role in the theory of adaptive systems. However, it is the system that determines its properties, not the way it is represented by equations. Therefore, not withstanding the fact that representations are extremely convenient in analyzing dynamical systems, it is important to be able to define properties such as controllability and observability in a representation independent way.
