Part of the Systems & Control: Foundations & Applications book series (SCFA)

In this chapter we introduce the subject of this book at an informal and intuitive level. The main purpose is to give the reader some flavor of the different aspects of adaptive systems. We do not pretend to cover the most general cases; rather we restrict ourselves to mainstream structures. One of the reasons for this choice is that adaptive systems form an active field of research. Many problems are still open, and as a consequence, the rules of the game have not yet been fixed.
