The Great Solitary Wave of John Scott Russell
In view of the general interest in waves, observing a new wave phenomenon in the beginning of the 19th century should not be considered as a purel chance event. But the emotional reaction of the the discoverer of the soliton to his discovery was exceptional. Devoting many years of his life to studying its properties and thinking of it, it is evident that the fate of the discovery is closely interwoven with the fate of the discoverer, and so it is of interest to learn something about Russell’s life and accomplishments.
