Recall that by 1937 for a finite euclidean simplicial complex K of dimension n, the set [K; S n ] of homotopy classes of continuous maps K → S n had been completely determined; in the language of cohomology, the Hopf-Hurewicz-Whitney theorem (chap. II, §4,C) gives a natural bijection
