Abstract

In Chapter 1 we introduced Fermat’s principle in an elementary way, without any critical analysis of its consequences. In contrast, in this chapter, we will analyze Fermat’s principle in depth, together with the related Lagrangian formalism and partial differential equations, in view of introducing the Hamiltonian formalism.
