A Decomposition Theorem Related to the Rank of a Matrix

Here, for sake of simplicity, we often assume that the matrices we are dealing with are square matrices. Indeed, an arbitrary matrix can be transformed into a square matrix by attaching zero rows (columns), without changing its rank.
