In effect, this volume addresses foundations of the élan vital(the vital force or impulse of life). It does so at the level of those forces “performing an essential role in the living body” and, specifically. at the level of those forces central to the function of the protein-based machines that sustain Life. in Chapter 5, by de novo design, without having resorted to copying or mimicking any recognized biological protein-based machine, elastic-contractile model proteins were designed, prepared, and demonstrated to be capable of interconverting the set of energies interconverted by living organisms. The forces responsible for the diverse energy conversions were experimentally characterized, analyzed, and given definition.
