Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the combined effects of GA3 with additional KNO3 fertilisation on flowering and cut flower quality of Gladiolus grandiflorus ‘Eurovision’ in late autumn planting. The corms (size 10/12) were soaked in solutions of GA3 at 0 (control), 50 and 100 mgkg−1 for one hour 5 days before planting and were planted at 49 corms.m−2 density on November 24. Before planting, the basal dose of 30 g.m−2 ammonium sulphate (21 %) and 45 g.m−2 triple super phosphate (42 %) were mixed with the soil. At the three-four leaf stage, the dose of KNO3 (43 %, 13 %) at 25 g.m−2 was applied in all the experimental plots. Applications of 25 g.m−2 KNO3 as an additional fertiliser in half of the experimental plots at weekly intervals were continued until 2 weeks before the corms were dug. Both the treatment of GA3 at 100 ppm and additional KNO3 fertilisation shortened the time from planting to harvest, and increased flowering percentage, the length of flower stem and spike, the number of flowers per spike and the diameter of flower stem in late autumn planting.
