Abstract

Organic farming for citrus cultivation is expanding in Corsica since the latest ten years. But yields are generally much lower than under inorganic fertilization. For the last five years, we have elaborated tests to research the origin of that low yield and also to define means for cultural improvement. The study included comparison of leaf mineral composition under organic and inorganic fertilization for a characteristic soil, test of different organic produces, soil analysis changes in the different orchards.

Low yields are related to bad nitrogen assimilation by roots, and it is necessary to use two complementary organic produces:

  • - one, rich in nitrogen, providing a sufficient amount of nitrate,

  • - the other, rich in organic carbon, securing a steady nitrogen feeding during the vegetative period.
