Abstract
The clinical management of patients treated by chronic peritoneal dialysis is basically the same as with other forms of dialysis. They are presented in other parts of this book, so we will focus on those aspects which are more specific to peritoneal dialysis. These specific aspects are related to the tolerance of the peritoneal membrane to a non physiological environment, to the permanent glucose load as well as protein losses and to the presence of the peritoneal catheter. Eventually the prevention of infecic is the key factor of a successful peritoneal dialysis program. We must also underline that, due to the continuous treatment, variations in clinical status and blood chemistry on peritoneal dialysis are much slower than on haemodialysis: this often results in a non recognition of some complications that may therefore have a delayed diagnosis
