Abstract
The introduction of the artificial kidney into clinical practice in 1943 by Kloff in the Netherlands, and in 1947 by Alwall in Sweden and Murray in Canada was an astounding technical breakthrough in modern medicine (1–3). Subsequently, the most frequent abnormality for which dialysis has been used acutely has been acute tubular necrosis. It is the diagnosis in approximately two-thirds of all patients dialyzed for acute renal failure
