Abstract
If physicians are to change …, their education will have to encourage reflection, personal development, and the growth of self-knowledge. The current environment of the medical school, with its information overload, frenzied activity and competitive ethos, in many ways discourages personal development of this kind. Medical scientists sometimes make reference to “the frontiers of knowledge.” I think they have in mind a frontier that is “out there.” The newest and most challenging frontier may be within us.
