Managing Chronic Illness

  • John S. Rolland

Abstract

Janice, a married woman in her 30s with two small children, received the most up-to-date medical treatment and expert surgical interventions during her 4-year bout with cancer. Six months after her physician pronounced her cured, Janice and her husband Sam separated. A prolonged emotional and financially draining divorce and custody battle ensued. Sam drank heavily and became verbally abusive. Both children developed behavioral problems at home and at school that required crisis intervention, bringing this disintegrating family to treatment for the first time.
