South Africa: the Port of Durban

Part of the GeoJournal Library book series (GEJL, volume 51)

This chapter explores the institutional format of port management in South Africa. In early 1996, I visited the head office of the national port organisation of South Africa, Portnet, in Johannesburg and also travelled to the ports of Durban on the east coast and Cape Town on the south west coast. The text concentrates primarily on the port of Durban because it is the most important port in South Africa and no notable differences were found between Durban and Cape Town in terms of the management of the various port activities.
