War and peace revisited

The aim of this paper is to identify the influence of Niko Tinbergen’s ideas on the modern study of the mechanisms that control behaviour. To do this, it is necessary first to give an account of Tinbergen’s views on the subject, then to see how these ideas were developed in the light of the research that they stimulated (the second wave of ethology), and lastly to identify those aspects of modern theory on the causation of behaviour that can be traced back to Tinbergen’s ideas and scholarship. While the first of these steps is easy (because Tinbergen wrote so well) and the second relatively easy (because this topic is already well reviewed), the last has proved surprisingly difficult.
