The Civilian Recycling Industry: A Key Contribution to Disarmament
In a LWR reactor loaded with the usual enriched uranium fuel (the UO2 fuel), as soon as the nuclear reactions start and during all the core irradiation period (3 or 4 years), some plutonium is produced in situ by U238 transmutation, and part of this plutonium is immediately engaged in fission and thus energy production. At the end, depending upon the discharge burn-up of such fuel, 30 to 40 % of the nuclear power actually comes from plutonium.
