In this monograph, we have focused on the problem of transmitting stored variable-bit-rate video. Because the information about a stored video stream is known a priori to the start of playback, network and server resource requirements can be anticipated before any of the video data is actually transmitted. In addition, by using this information along with a client-side buffer, the resource requirements can be smoothed by prefetching large bursts of video data before they occur.
