Abstract
This chapter introduces the system model and related terminology that is used throughout this book. Partially, the terminology as defined in [xcCri91b, xcLap92] was chosen since it covers hardware as well as software aspects. Generally speaking, each system is defined by its system structure and by the behavior of its constituting components. The two aspects of structure and behavior have to be covered by a system model to allow appropriate abstraction from the complexity of the “real” system.
