Critique of Diagnostic Formalism

Part of the Philosophy and Medicine book series (PHME, volume 40)

Drs.Pellegrino [12] and Schaffner [17] give admirable accounts of the state of the art of computer Medicine — scholarly statements from the bench, not the bar. Apart from asides, they grind no axes; they write with tempered enthusiasm, neither (as Pellegrino says) in romantic scorn of this interloper into august clinical practice, nor in uncritical adulation of this new organum. Both respect the collective, if unarticulated, wisdom of clinicians. Faced with such writings, the critic too easily turns either to lofty prose about something else, or to nitpicking, “talent snapping at the heels of genius”.
