Abstract

As paeans of praise from peers—critics may call them perjuries—cascaded down my face, the brain exploded with pride and the heart with gratitude. Asked by a friend my reactions to such premature obituaries, there came to mind the words of the nineteenth-century labor leader Samuel Gompers regarding worker demands: More! More! More! Then arose the sobering statement from Sirach: Do not praise a man before he has spoken.
