Occupation 1 represents a palimpsest of cultural remains found in contexts that were stratigraphically below midden deposits attributed to later occupations. While this stratigraphic ambiguity is cause for uneasiness regarding claims that the remains represent a single component, the internal consistency of artifacts from the submidden and of radiocarbon dates from Occupation 1 features, as well as corroborating evidence from other components of similar age, overcome the stratigraphic problem to a considerable extent.
